The holidays are upon us! It’s time to get ready for all the food, fun, friends and family that are about to descend on your home. Follow this list, and you’ll be able to sit back, relax and spread holiday cheer in no time.

DECLUTTER YOUR HOME

Before you even touch the vacuum, take a walk through your home and put away any stray items lying around. While you’re at it, give surfaces a quick dusting. With all the food, drinks, decorations and gifts to come, you’ll want to be working with a clutter-free space.

Consider investing in some decorative baskets or storage bins to neatly store excess items you won’t be needing over the holidays. This is also a good time to set aside piles of clothing and other household items that can be donated. Just make sure you get to the donation center before your guests arrive!

CLEAN THE KITCHEN

You might think you need to set aside a couple of hours (or more) to deep clean your

kitchen, but we advise against that! Make it a point to wipe down the counters, microwave, and fridge. Then, give the floors a quick sweep. Whether you’re having 5 or 50 guests, the kitchen is bound to get messy while whipping up all your holiday goodies. Save the deep clean for after the holidays!

Even if you are headed to grandma’s house, it’s always a great feeling to come home to a clean kitchen! Additionally, clear out anything in your fridge that can rot while your away. If you are hosting, make sure there is ample room in your fridge for all the extra holiday food (stock up on Tupperware!).

GOT BABIES AND PETS?

Holiday decorations can be hazardous to pets and babies, so it’s important to keep them out of reach as much as possible. Furthermore, cover electrical outlets, block stairways to prevent falls, and keep a watchful eye on candles and menorahs. If you live in a cold-weather climate, make sure your entryway and backyard are cleared of ice and snow. That way there are no slips from adults or kids!

Hot tip: surround your Christmas tree with large boxes disguised as presents to keep children and pets away from low hanging ornaments. To play it safe, hang all of the breakable ornaments out of reach.

You might not be aware that certain holiday plants are toxic so keep that in mind when putting up your decorations. Those cute little berries on the mistletoe are actually poisonous, so consider using a fake child-safe option. Got any tips you want to share? Drop a comment below!

PLAYING HOST

Take a moment to think about who will be coming to your home and what their needs may be. Is your sister-in-law Vegan? Is Aunt Susie still on that Keto kick? Keep dietary restrictions and your guests’ needs in mind so everyone has something they can eat.

In addition, double-check that all the bathrooms are stocked with supplies. There is nothing worse than realizing there is no toilet paper left half-way through your bathroom visit!

Lastly, give your guests a heads up on where they can and can’t park in your neighborhood. Parking tickets or worse—getting towed—doesn’t make for a holly, jolly holiday! If you have guests that live close by, you can recommend they take a ride share service to cut down on parking congestion. This is also a good option for guests that plan on indulging in something a little (or a lot) stronger than hot chocolate.

AVOID BEDROOM BLUNDERS

If you are hosting friends and family for the holidays, you’ll want to make sure they feel as at home as possible! Something as simple as clean sheets and towels go a long way in making guests feel welcome. Don’t forget to check the closet to make sure they have room to put their things away and extra hangers! If you want to go the extra mile, leave some reading material by their bed or lend them your iPad for the weekend. A little downtime is always necessary during the holidays!

CHECK SMOKE DETECTORS

Individually check each smoke detector to ensure they are functional. According to the American Red Cross, house fires increase between the fall and winter months and peak in December and January. With all the toasty fires and food to come, you’ll want to have peace of mind just in case something were to happen. Need replacements? Check out this affordable best-seller.
